CZ Warns AI Is Outpacing Crypto Defenses After $6.3B Binance Hack
Key Takeaways
- CZ says AI is accelerating cyberattacks faster than financial firms can strengthen defenses.
- He called for government support and a crypto security alliance after Binance’s $6.3B breach.
- Binance’s rapid loss coverage helped contain contagion, but the hack exposed a wider security gap.
CZ Wants US, China Help After Binance Hack
The Binance hack was not merely a problem for one exchange, according to Changpeng Zhao (CZ). It was a warning for the global financial system.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the Oct. 29 hack, CZ said attacks on major crypto platforms now carry consequences far beyond digital assets. Stablecoins, tokenized securities and real-world assets have made crypto increasingly connected to banks and sovereign debt markets.
“It impacts the company, it impacts industry, it impacts global finance,” CZ told the Talking Tokens Podcast. “It’s all interconnected. And I think given the size of impact, it’s definitely at the national security level as well.”
The FBI attributed the attack to North Korean hackers. CZ said he had not spoken with President Donald Trump or Washington officials, but added that the industry would welcome help from the U.S. and China.
AI Is Accelerating the Cyber Arms Race
CZ’s sharpest warning focused on artificial intelligence (AI).
He said crypto once faced major attacks weekly or monthly. Now, several can occur in a day as AI helps hackers automate reconnaissance, phishing, and vulnerability discovery.
“The only way to fight a monster is to kind of become that monster,” he said. “We actually need the AI capabilities to defend.”
CZ argued that offensive AI tools are advancing faster than defensive products available to financial companies. That imbalance could slow mainstream adoption if exchanges and protocols cannot contain future incidents.
Traditional banks are exposed as well, he said, because attackers target credentials, software dependencies and employee devices across both industries.
CZ Calls for a Crypto Security Alliance
The former Binance chief also backed an industry-wide security group.
Such an alliance could share audit findings, exchange lessons from hacks and coordinate faster asset freezes. It could also help firms identify common attack methods before they spread.
“Binance, the industry as a whole, has not invested enough in security,” CZ said. “Many of the AI security tools are not available to the industry yet.”
He expects discussions around a joint initiative to accelerate after the recent surge in attacks.
Binance’s Response Limited Market Contagion
CZ said Binance’s decision to cover all losses helped prevent a broader crisis.
The exchange quickly told customers that user funds were safe, while its capital position and insurance reserves gave the statement credibility. Bitcoin and the wider crypto market fell, but the decline was smaller than the technology-stock selloff that day, he noted.
Hourly deposits also exceeded withdrawals within a day of the breach. That recovery does not erase the security failure. CZ acknowledged that the attack was preventable and said institutional complacency remains a serious risk.
His broader message was blunt: crypto companies must now defend themselves at machine speed, because their attackers already are.
